Goulburn Base Hospital Palliative Care Unit Art Project
STA in partnership with Goulburn Base Hospital, and the Goulburn Palliative Care and Oncology Support Group have commissioned eight captivating artworks for the new Palliative Care Rooms located in the Goulburn Base Hospital’s Medical Inpatient Unit. This project was generously funded by the Goulburn Palliative Care and Oncology Support Group.
This project sought to engage artists under the age of 30, providing an exceptional opportunity for emerging talents to contribute to the well-being of patients and their families. Four talented young artists—Jade Bull, Cara Ellison, Joanna Hughes, and Hannah Williams—were selected to each create two artworks that will adorn the Palliative Care rooms, adding a touch of vibrancy and beauty to the space. The new Palliative Care rooms are state of the art in terms of medical resources and care. The addition of real art into the rooms will create a more beautiful space for patients and their families.
To showcase these pieces before their installation at the hospital, a special exhibition will be held at the Gallery on Track Crib Room, located at 5 Blackshaw Rd, Goulburn. The public is invited to view the artworks up close on Saturday and Sunday, February 3rd and 4th, from 10 am to 4 pm.
A nominal $5 donation to the Goulburn Palliative Care and Oncology Support Group is encouraged, with all proceeds contributing to the ongoing support of such impactful initiatives.

The Artists
Cara Ellison
Cara is a 21 year old visual artist living in Goulburn who loves to paint nature, and animals using acrylics and water colours.
“When my grandmother was sick, she would like to look at old photos and talk about happy memories. So my idea was to recreate a holiday memory. This painting would be completed in acrylic paints. I would like my artwork to create a feeling of peace. I would like the person viewing it to feel as if they are standing at this wooden railing and looking out through the trees to the ocean. To feel surrounded by nature, with the sound of water and birds in the trees, and not in hospital.”
Joanna Hughes
Joanna is a 19-year-old artist from Big Hill – just outside the small town of Marulan. I paint primarily using oils and aspire to create art that represents life as we see it, depicting the beauty which we often disregard. This year I look forward to studying Fine Arts and Secondary Education at UNSW, Sydney. Through this degree I will be given opportunities to further explore my love for art.
“My artworks depict the serenity and beauty of Australian nature through its native plants and flowers. A large painting, using oil and/or acrylic paint, presenting a floral arrangement of native Australian plants including Bottlebrush, Eucalyptus, Wattle, Waratah, etc. Upon viewing this artwork, the audience can be reminded of the beauty within the trees, plants and flowers that play an integral and vital role in Australia’s major ecosystems. In this artwork, I would utilise a mixture of realism and surrealism to create a dream-like, colourful and intricate botanical arrangement.“
Hannah Williams
Hannah is a 17-year-old indigenous artist from Goulburn, whose practice mainly consists of painting indigenous style paintings with a story behind each artwork.
“Doing my artworks teach me about my culture and my people because that is what I am interested in. I’ve been creating myself a journey on discovering what my identity is and what it means to me. I am a proud Dharug young woman who embraces every aspect of my culture and their stories. My culture is huge part of my identity and morals.“
Jade Bull
Jade is a visual artist who works with painting, drawing, textiles and sculpture as part of her art making practice. Her love of exploration and creativity was cultivated at a young age by the support of her closest family and friends. Born in New Zealand Jade currently lives and works in the Southern Highlands, NSW as an emerging artist.
In 2020 Jade graduated the National Art School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) majoring in Painting. Her first postgraduate year she worked as a Gallery Assistant in Sydney. Since this time she has participated in public murals around the Greater Sydney and Southern Highlands area and has contributed in numerous exhibitions.
