Dig your own clay with Camille Kersley         Part 1      Part 2

Join Camille Kersley to create works of art from clay you have found and processed your self. It’s easier than you think and a lot of fun.

We recommend you watch the video before you gather your materials and tools together to get inspired.

Part 1 The Dig – An art adventure to find natural clay deposits. Camille shows you how to find natural clay deposits in your local environment.  Where to look and how to collect the clay in an environmentally low impact way.

Tools – you won’t need any materials to find your clay.

  • Good shoes a
  • Dress for the weather. Clay can be easier to find after rain
  • Gloves to protect your hands
  • A bucket or container
  • A garden spade to dig you clay.

If you are heading out to a paddock, local park or river why not make a day of it and pack a picnic.

Where

  • The best place to look for clay is in your own garden. If you are heading out around town always check with land owners for permission to dig clay.
  • If you are heading out to a paddock, park or river why not make a day of it and pack a picnic.

Safety and Earth Care

Remember when you go into nature you have to look after yourself. Be respectful of County and the creatures that live there.

Animal alert: Watch out for spiders and snakes. Never try to touch or approach a dangerous animal. If in doubt always ask your adult.

Never take clay from an area where animals have made their home such as a ants mount or wombat burrow. Always be respectful of the animals that live in our natural spaces and keep clear.

Tread lightly: When you find a clay deposit only take a little bit. When you leave the place should pretty much the same as how you found it. Be kind to our earth and grateful for all it provides.

We’d love to share your clay adventure with #STAkids.

Part 2 Process your Clay – Once you have found you clay Camille will show you how to process it to create your own ceramic works of art.

We recommend you watch the video before you gather your materials and tools together to get inspired.

Before you start find a space to work like an old table or work bench. Get help from your favourite adult for any tricky bits.

Part 2 includes inspiration and ideas to create with your processed clay.

Tools and equipment

  • Jars and containers
  • Water
  • Trays of any size
  • Sticks or stirrers

We recommend processing your clay outside as it can be a little messy (that’s why it’s so much FUN :).

Making

  • Old and unused cutlery make great tools for clay work.

Be sure to ask an adult what’s OK to use and then keep it for art making only.

Camille made us a cool animation of some of her clay cubes. What will you do with your clay creations?
