Djon Mundine OAM: Stories from the Studio
STA caught up with Djon Mundine OAM for a trip through The Dingo Project, an exhibition he curated for Ngununggula.
The Dingo Project investigates the spiritual mythology and the historical narratives of ancestral dingoes. Featuring work from nationally established artists such as Karla Dickens, Fiona Foley, Daniel Boyd and Fiona Hall as well as local talent with Trish Levett, Peter Swain, Tallulah McCord and a host of others.
The extraordinary quality of the works on display and the calibre of contributing artists is a testament to the deep respect Djon has achieved as one of Australia’s leading Curators. The Dingo Project is the latest example of a curator with the power to weave stories into compelling experiences that will stay with you long after you leave the gallery space.
It was a privilege to hear Djon talk about some of the works and the rich journey to achieve the exhibition. His animated story telling and deep knowledge about each work of art made for one of the most enjoyable Stories from the Studio experiences.
Djon in front of his work ALWAYS WILL BE! 2021, the first work as you enter the exhibition.
You simply can’t miss The Dingo Project on display at Ngununggula until 13 March 2022. Find out more. A highlight coming up is a day of Artists’ talk on 5 Feb featuring Dannie Mellor, Judith Crispin and Teena McCarthy. Check the Ngununggula socials for the full program closer to the date.

“Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land” is an important statement as it reasserts that the very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples, and that their sovereignty of this Country has never been ceded. It is a clear declaration that First Nations people are still here and are never leaving. A statement of resilience, survival, deep connection and celebration.
Djon Mundine OAM is a proud Bandjalung man from the Northern Rivers of New South Wales who has lived in the Southern Highlands for nine years.
Special thanks to Megan Monte and the wonderful team at Ngununggula for supporting STA to walk with Djon on the path of the Dingo
