Liberty Theatre, Yass

The restoration and upgrade of the iconic 1939 Art Deco Liberty Theatre in Yass will enable the community of Yass Valley to again enjoy cinema, theatre, stage, musical, and arts productions. It is also intended to bring tertiary education to the area and provide sound, film, video and production experience for the youth of the region, who may be looking at possible employment in those fields.

Listed by the National Trust as a heritage building of national significance, the theatre will receive a major upgrade and revitalitalisation of its current facilities whilst maintaining the wonderful and much-loved heritage aspects of the building.

The Liberty Theatre is Australia’s sole surviving 1939 Ocean liner style cinema designed by Architects Crick and Furse from Sydney. This Theatre is a feature at the southern end of the main street in Yass and has been the venue for cinema till its closure in the early 1970’s. After the Theatre closed in the early 1970’s, it had a checkered life as roller-skating rink, then an up market interior gift shop, and before that it was converted to mini offices and the front foyer a video store.

For the past 27 years the Theatre has been home to the Yass Repertory Society, the longest continuously running society in NSW. With the construction of a stage and dressing rooms, their productions, music halls and pantomimes have enthralled audiences across the generations, drama classes have been enjoyed for junior members of the community.

Many residents of the Yass region have fond memories of enjoying family movies, teen outings, first dates at the Cinema followed by many marriage proposals. We know with the restoration of the Art Deco Theatre we can return those wonderful memories, and we also envisage a much broader use to incorporate entertainment, enjoyment, education, and employment.
