Stories from the Studio: Ken McDonald
This week we’re talking to sculptor Ken McDonald! Ken has lived in Wingecaribee all his life enjoys sharing fascinating stories about his life in the Highlands.
Ken created the amazing stone sculptures on the road side in Bundanoon, Penrose and Wingello, memorialising the flora and fauna native to the Southern Highlands. The Wingello Village Store and the Bruggeman family have sponsored the Stonemason’s Trail to highlight these treasures and give recognition to the talents of Ken McDonald.
Ken was also commissioned by The Wingello Village Store to make a statue of the local Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo. The resulting work title Kenneth the Cockatoo stands over two metres tall and uses a sandstone block found by Ken in a local quarry. The sculpture captures the intensity of a local Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo gnawing on Banksia nuts.
Ken is mostly known for his sculptural work but he is also an amazing oil painter! His work is inspired by the bush and natural world around him. You can see his paintings at the upcoming Penrose Art Show at Penrise Hall from March 17 to 19!
Ken McDonalds oil paintings will be on display at the Penrose Art Show at Penrose Hall from 17 – 19 March. The Penrose Art Show 2023 will showcase the talented artists of the Southern Highlands. Come along and enjoy drinks and nibbles whilst chatting with the featured artists at the openning 17 Mar – Get your TIX to the soiree! Sat & Sun – open viewing, gold coin donation entry.
