STA were thrilled to zoom in for a chat and a cup of tea with sculptor and arts advocate Al Phemister in his studio in Yass, NSW.

2020 looked promising. I had ideas about new Sculptures, opportunities were emerging, workshops to organise – the year felt full of possibilities. When the Coronavirus pandemic hit my art opportunities disappeared and I was stood down from my part time job. I have been confined to my home and studio. 

I decided to use this time as an opportunity for making, creating and trying new things. Some ideas are developing into new sculptures, while others now litter the ‘sculpture graveyard’.  I have made improvements to the studio and I am learning new skills like how to use Photoshop.  My daughter is studying Photography at RMIT in Melbourne and she hasn’t complained about the many phone calls for help yet!

With upcoming exhibitions being cancelled, last week, two small commissions!  Seems others are thinking about their own environments, and perhaps improving them.  While it seems most of my art jobs have disappeared this year, I am making the most of the available time and hopefully, creating future opportunities. 

I miss the interaction I normally have with fellow artists and will need to seek them out via phone and social media.  I am looking forward to a return to normal life but am savouring this time while I can.
