Creative Gunning presents a performance by Joel Bulger on Didgeridoo and Henry Liang on Japanese Shō.

The Didgeridoo and the Japanese Shō are both culturally significant musical instruments. The Shō is an ancient Japanese bamboo reed instrument that has been preserved in its traditional form since the 7th century. This performance combines the ethereal sound of the shō with the grounded didgeridoo sound

Presenting music, history and culture in an engaging and accessible way, Joel and Henry will explain the history of their instruments and demonstrate how they make music.

The concert will also feature a world premiere composition duet.

About the Artists

Joel Bulger is a Ngunnawal and Wiradjuri man who has been playing the didgeridoo since he was five years old. He has given presentations on First Nations culture and didgeridoo performance at occasions including the 2017 NRL World Cup in Canberra, the Gunning Arts Festival and Connect@Gunning station events, and at memorial services including the Gunning ANZAC Day Dawn Service.

Henry Liang is Australia’s leading performer on the Japanese Shō and has twenty years of experience as a professional musician. He has won scholarships to study traditional Japanese music and Shō performance with Shō Masters in Japan and is currently a full-time musician in the Royal Australian Navy Band. He has been commissioned by the ABC to record works for ABC Classic FM and is passionate about sharing his knowledge of Japanese music culture.
