NSW Contemporary Music Strategy: A Collaborative 10-Year Plan to Transform the Industry

The NSW Contemporary Music Strategy 2025-2034 is a10-year plan developed by the NSW Government, aimed at strengthening the state’s music industry through collaboration. With a focus on upskilling professionals, improving infrastructure, and championing local talent, the strategy seeks to position New South Wales as a global hub for contemporary music. Its objectives are to grow audiences, support industry professionals, and foster community cohesion while driving economic benefits unique to the music sector.

A Growing Industry with New Challenges

The NSW music sector already generates $5.5 billion annually and provides over 14,000 jobs within live music alone. However, challenges such as evolving audience preferences, technological advancements, and global competition require strategic responses. This plan is designed to address these challenges, with the intent to secure long-term sustainability for the industry.

Three Pillars of Action

The strategy focuses on three key areas to achieve its goals:

  1. Building a More Viable Industry: Initiatives include dedicated funding for First Nations music, supporting young promoters, and increasing access to all-ages music events.
  2. Expanding Audiences: Efforts to raise the profile of NSW artists include the introduction of the NSW Music Prize, campaigns to promote local music globally, and expanded opportunities for live music.
  3. Strengthening Communities Through Music: The plan highlights the role of music in promoting mental health, social connection, and cultural inclusivity. Support for regional music initiatives and programs targeting underrepresented groups are key priorities.

Goals and Metrics

The strategy outlines benchmarks for its 10-year duration, including:

  • Doubling the number of dedicated live music venues from 55 to 110.
  • Increasing live music employment by 43%, with the goal of reaching 20,000 jobs.
  • Expanding the economic contribution of contemporary music from $2.7 billion to $3.5 billion annually.

It also aims to grow opportunities for First Nations artists and promote NSW music through international partnerships and trade missions.

Collaboration Across Sectors

Recognising that a thriving music industry relies on a coordinated effort, the strategy emphasises partnerships among government, private sector stakeholders, educational institutions, and local communities. By fostering collaboration, the plan seeks to create a more resilient, inclusive, and innovative music ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

This strategy represents a significant investment in the future of NSW’s music industry, addressing current challenges while preparing for global opportunities. By promoting local talent, enhancing infrastructure, and connecting communities through music, the NSW Contemporary Music Strategy sets the stage for a vibrant decade of growth and creativity.
