Pauline Balos

For over thirty years Pauline has worked in several mediums. Her acrylic painting, with details of her household surroundings, invites the viewer to appreciate the simple things from a different perspective. While Pauline’s 3D work is in jewellery and small cut-out sculptures that trend towards female figures.

Her other great love is to create collaged pictures from her imagination where dissimilar images combine to make a new reality. She finds that the challenge in collage is to find the odd piece that will support the story she wishes to tell. Scale, visual direction, colour and tone are all important elements in each selection to make a good composition.

Pauline participated in member and former-member exhibitions with the Shop 7 Artspace in Bermagui for over 10 years and since her recent move to Yass, the Members Exhibition of the Visual Arts Society of Yass.

 Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer enjoys playing with mark making, colours and textures.

She is always collecting beautiful things she finds in nature – partially chewed eucalyptus leaves, bark, gum nuts, fallen feathers, shells, dried flowers, abandoned nests. As George Harrison said, “everyone should have themselves regularly overwhelmed by Nature”.

Her art mostly reflects the natural world – such as trees, leaves, gum blossoms, sunflowers and feathers.

Jennifer uses watercolour, acrylic, oils, charcoal and ink – often using these all together with mixed media.

Her focus is finding the joy and mindfulness through the journey of creating. Jennifer has previously participated in the Visual Arts Society of Yass Member Exhibitions.

Penny Kerr

Penny is a self-taught willow artisan inspired by the English art of willow sculpture. She creates mostly animals and botanic shapes that engage with the landscape of Yass Valley.

All of her materials are currently sourced in and around her property just outside Yass, but Penny is contemplating incorporating other materials, such as wire, to provide greater structural integrity and to lengthen the life of those sculptures that are continuously exposed outdoors to the harsh Australian elements.

Penny has exhibited with the Visual Arts Society of Yass and has run several well-attended willow sculpting workshops.

Helen MacArthur

Helen is a visual artist based in Yass NSW and likes to express herself usually though 3D sculptures. Recently she has been exploring connections with nature. She has travelled extensively and draws inspiration from ancient ruins, artefacts, and cultures she encounters.

Using recycled objects, copper and various fibres, Helen experiments with methods and treatments to create unique surface finishes.

Using crochet, knitting, and weaving techniques Helen turns stories into abstract but recognisable shapes that she creates.  She is motivated by process and allows her work to evolve through textures, patterns, and patinas, drawing on negative space to explore and re-build what she imagines once was.

Helen studied at Canberra Institute of Technology, completing her Diploma of Visual Arts in 2019.

In 2020 Helen was the winner of the Strathnairn Arts Association, Squares2020 Exhibition with her work “Twenty Twenty”. She has also exhibited locally at M16 ArtSpace, Yarralumla Gallery and Visual Arts Society Yass.

Helen was a finalist in the Sculpture@Shaw Cellar Door Exhibition 2022 with her work “KRAAL”.

Karen Visser

Karen is a photographer, painter and crocheter and has been the chairperson of the Yass Art and Craft Cooperative for more than 25 years.  Recently she has collaborated with local author Rhian Williams using crochet to bring the animals, insects and emergency vehicles featured in her children’s books to life.

Karen’s photography features birds, landscapes and macro fauna and she contributed to the Reflections on Nature – An Artist in Residency Exhibition in February 2023 held at The Old Barn in Pialligo.

Karen is a member of the Art of Flow Creative Community led by Gabbi Lancaster Kitchener and is particularly drawn to multimedia works of abstracted reality featuring strong colours. Her Tidbinbilla bark inspired watercolour was included in the Belconnen Arts Centre ‘Earth Unframed’ Exhibition in March 2023, she exhibited acrylic and oil paintings at the Yass Show Society in 2022, 2023 and 2024,  participated in the ‘Squares’ Exhibition at Strathnairn Gallery, ACT in August 2023 and has been part of the Visual Arts Society of Yass Member Exhibitions for the last three years.

In January 2024 Karen held her first solo exhibition ‘Where do you find Hope?’ at Tyger Gallery in Yass. She was included in the FOCUS: Artists of the STA Region exhibition from November 2024 at Connect@GunningStation.
