Carol Bairnsfather: Stories from the Studio

STA spent some time with artist Carol Bairnsfather.

Carol has exhibited her work in several galleries in NSW and the ACT. Her work includes felting, dyeing and embroidery. More recently she has been experimenting with natural dyes made from leaves, seeds, skins of fruit etc.

Carol’s work is currently on display at Gallery on Track for the month of May. Please visit Gallery on Track website for further details.

After retiring from my career as a primary school teacher,  there has been time for me to explore creative pursuits. My interest in textile art started with sewing, knitting and crocheting, which I learnt as a child, later, weaving, then screen printing. However, it was when I took part in my first felt making workshop with Carol Divall in 2010, that I discovered the joy of working with fibres and textiles.

I joined a number of textile based groups & attended countless workshops which led me to explore a wide range of textile arts, including embroidery, dyeing & a variety of felt making techniques. More recently, I’ve been experimenting with dyes created with natural materials including leaves, seeds, skins of fruit and vegetables. Much of my work is a fusion of techniques and materials.

I have exhibited work in a number of galleries in NSW & ACT including here, in Gallery on Track, where I’ve been a member since 2012.
