A RAM for Crookwell
Earlier this year STA were able to introduce sculptor Carl Valerius to Kathleen Bowerman from Upper Lachlan Council. Kathleen was charged with finding a fabulous new piece of public art for Crookwell after successfully securing funding from Transport for NSW for an end of year street party that included funds to see new public art installed in the town.
The meeting which took place at Carl’s studio in Harden was a chance for Kathleen to see the depth and breath of Carl’s practise. Carl is an established sculpture with a national profile and a master at bronze casting and carving in marble, two skills that are now rare and precious skills sets.
Carl had in this studio an exquisite Rams head that instantly captured Kathleen’s imagination. It perfectly connected to the heritage of Crookwell and Upper Lachlan wool industries and the enduring connecting of our community to sheep.
Carl’s Ram’s head has been cast into Bronze and installed permanently on Goulburn Street across the road from the IGA. Carl even created a bespoke granite stand for the Ram to sit on adding a sense of grandness to the final installation.
The Ram’s Head sculpture was officially unveiled on December 13 2024, at the Crookwell Christmas Street party. By Carl, Mayor Paul Culhane and Upper Lachlan Council CEO Alex Waldron.
