How to Write a Musical – Southern Tablelands Arts

Top 3 reasons your musical theatre, loving young person should do the Term 1 course ‘How to Write a Musical!’

1. EDUCATIONAL: They’re going to learn a TON! Your kid will be immersed in learning how a musical comes together and then apply the lessons and techniques in a collaborative writing project with their peers. Along the way, they’re also going to learn a whole lot more about musical theatre, teamwork and theatre ensemble work. (They’ll also get a certificate at the end of it).

2. EXPERTISE: They’ll be taught by Jye Bryant who is working in the industry, writing his own musicals, having them licenced and performed by companies everywhere. They’ll use his book as their own study resource and be mentored by someone who has done the work, who has teaching experience and who loves mentoring kids.

3. ENGAGEMENT: Each week kids will learn a key skill around musical theatre writing, composition, musicality and/or acting. We need kids with some musical or writing skills in this course. They will build on these skills to produce a final script/book for a read-through. The learning will become a stepping stone for them to write their own musical, understand musical theatre production and build their skills in the Arts (more info on outcomes in pic). Plus, they’re going to have a lot of fun with other talented kids.

About Jye Bryant

Jye Bryant is a specialist dramaturg. An exprience msucial theatre composer and lyricist, with a passion for theatre and education. Jye will teach the core themes and methods to write a musical and facilitate dramatic composition. Jai will facilitate classes via zoom and each student will recieve a copys of jye’s book “Writing and Staging a Musical – A handbook” which will form the foundation for the coursework. Jai will attend the final reading in Goulburn on the 10th of April.

About Alex Ridley

Alex is a secondary education teach (english, history, performing arts) with over 25 years experience. Alex will facilitate the live workshops and mentor participants through the creative and writing process.
