Stories from the Studio: James Houlcroft (AKA HOUL)

We visited James Houlcroft, known as “Houl,” while he was painting a cool melting Gala mural at the Tarago Showground for the PAINT THE TOWN Street Art Festival. James is a versatile street artist whose work combines humour and creativity, bringing life to streetscapes and festivals. His art has even been projected onto iconic landmarks like Questacon and the National Library of Australia during Canberra’s Enlighten Festival.

James is an English teacher at Dickson College in Canberra and also runs a mural-making class with Year 11 and 12 students! The school has a legal practice wall where students can develop their street art skills, and the group have been commissioned to create murals around the ACT, including a shipping container and a bus stop project scheduled for next year.

Check out James’s work on Instagram @houlart to see more of his art or to commission a mural of your own.

James is one of the talented artists contributing to the vibrant murals of the PAINT THE TOWN Street Art Festival. With over 50 murals across the Southern Tablelands, the PAINT THE TOWN Street Art Tour is a fantastic way to explore this vibrant art scene.  Each artwork reflects the resilience and recovery of communities affected by the 2019 Black Summer fires, with designs shaped by co-design workshops involving those directly impacted. Grab your crew, follow the PTT Google map, and dive into the creativity!
