Stories from the Studio: Lea Durie

Lea is an artist who works with ceramics, found materials, textiles, and paper, focusing on the connection between humanity and nature. Lea’s art often uses local materials, including wild clay, to address the impact of extreme weather and climate change. Lea has a background as a Landscape Architect and is currently pursuing a Masters of Contemporary Art Practices at the ANU School of Art and Design.

Lea’s work centers on clay, with two main focuses: functional pieces through Mud Dept and fine art works that explore themes of place and environmental change. From her home studio in Braidwood, Lea conducts workshops to share her skills and inspire others. This week, STA visits Lea Durie at her studio to see her art in action.

Lea is currently exhibiting work in the STA Box Gallery in Wollondilly with the works set to tour to the other three Box Gallery locations across the year.

Her exhibtion Erased : Lost.  will be on display at Wollondilly Council Chambers until June 14 and will then travel to the STA Box Gallery Yass for the winter.

You can see some of Lea’s work at the The 2024 QPRC and Bendigo Bank Art Awards. The Art Awards started in 2008 following a partnership with the Queanbeyan Art Society dating back to 1975. Council sponsored a major acquisitive prize at the society’s annual exhibition and the prize-winning artworks form the bulk of council’s art collection. The collection also contains additional works acquired at these exhibitions and others that have been gifted, and totals approximately 130 works. Since 2008 the Art Awards have been both a non-acquisitive and acquisitive exhibition sponsored and managed by QPRC and held in The Q-Exhibition Space, in Queanbeyan. Works will be on exhibition until June 15. FIND OUT MORE
