Stories from the Studio: Miah-Tya Nungheena Gowland
This week we visit Miah-Tya at her home studio in Bungendore. Miah-Tya is a zine maker and filmmaker whose work explores themes of place, community, and growing up in rural Australia. Her studio is filled with handwritten diaries and handmade zines!
Recently, Miah-Tya created a film that reflects on zines and her experiences growing up on Country. Set in her local area, the film brings together a collective of creatives from Bungendore celebrating the connections that can grow within small rural communities.
She is currently working with the Powerhouse Museum to deliver a new three day workshop program focused on creating digital zines, blending her two favourite art forms: zines and film. One workshop will take place in Sydney, and the other will be held locally in Queanbeyan.
Find out more about Miah-Tya at her website miahtya-productions, and follow her on instagram @miahtyaproductions and @miahtya. You can also see her work at filmfreeway.com and on YouTube!
Miah-Tya’s workshop in Queanbeyan is happening from 22–24 April 2025, running daily from 10am to 2pm. Creative Studio: Capsule Documentary with Miah-Tya Nungheena Gowland is a dynamic three-day workshop where young creatives aged 11–17 will explore the art of visual storytelling through multimedia and collage. This powerhouse program invites participants to experiment, create, and express their stories in powerful visual form. The workshop is completely free, but places are limited.
