It’s poetry month and STA ‘went bush’ with acclaimed poet Robyn Sykes at her studio in Binalong. A livewire character Robyn has incubated crocodile eggs, lived in Japan, edited a regional town newspaper and focussed an electron microscope. She lives surrounded by her inspiration on a farm in south-west NSW, where she loves to recite poetry to the kookaburras.

Robyn draws her inspiration from the nature around her home and spends a lot of her creative time sitting in a gorgeous tree or walking through a paddock near her house.

Robyn Sykes is a multi-awarded poet, speaker and entertainer who writes and performs Australian poetry.ro

We were lucky to have Robyn read us some of her poems inspired by the landscape around the Yass Valley.  Robyn’s work draws on her fascination with nature, human behaviour and the idiosyncratic.

Robyn will be running workshops for young people via Zoom in September as part of our Virtual to Actual performance poetry program. Contact us for more information.

Her poems are published in journals and anthologies nationally, internationally and online, including Not Very Quiet, Messages from the Embers and the Bimblebox 153 exhibition (curated by Jill Sampson). Multiple bush poetry accolades for both writing and performing adorn her mantlepiece.

The talented performer loves to entertain at festivals, community events, conferences, schools and more. Audiences around Australia have applauded her energetic renditions, including at festivals such as Woodford (Qld), Illawarra, Kangaroo Valley, Tamworth and Boyup Brook (WA). She has graced stages in New Zealand, Norfolk Island and King Island.

Her workshops include sessions to hone skills in poetry/prose/performance for both adults and children, how cryptic crosswords help your writing, and drama for children.

Robyn also mentors emerging performers and public speakers, judges bush poetry competitions (both written and performance) and coordinates poetry events, including Binalong’s bimonthly A Brush with Poetry.
