Sharon Powell: Stories from the Studio

This week STA caught up with Sharon Powell, a talented local artist, based in Goulburn, NSW. She grew up in the Sutherland Shire, Sydney and moved to Goulburn in 1999. Her first job out of school was an apprenticeship in graphic design. She was studying a diploma in Fine Arts at Goulburn TAFE, until government funding was removed.

She’s continued to express herself artistically through her work and creative pursuits and has been Rocky Hill Musical Theatre Company’s resident show artist for 6 years now, since its inception in 2016. Originally, she was a support for her daughters who were performing in Seussical but soon she was painting and designing props, sets and backdrops.

Sharon has continued to be involved each year across the company’s events as an artist, face painter, graphic designer for show programs, crewing, show support and even, as a performer. She’s an invaluable creative asset to the company and loved friend and colleague, to its members and theatre community.

Sharon’s partner in crime at Rocky Hill MTC is most often Martin Yeadon, who focuses on set construction. Martin usually builds it and Sharon paints it. Sharon has also painted for The Liz Barling School of Dance, painting large scale backdrops for their dance performances.

You can see Sharon’s amazing artwork on stage this weekend June 24th-26th in Rocky Hill Musical Theatre Company’s production of  ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Grab your tickets here: https://bit.ly/3PcGldT
