Stories from the Studio: Stephen Carroll

This week STA visited Stephen Carroll, an Australian artist known for his sumi-e and Chinese brush painting, at his studio in Crookwell. He was preparing for his exhibition at the SHAC gallery in Robertson that opened on the 23rd of May. Stephen welcomed me with a delicious cup of tea and shared his artistic journey and techniques.

Stephen studied under Janet Twigg-Patterson at the Red Crane Gallery in Canberra, in Japan with Ransui Yakata, and in China with Mr. Pi. He continues to work with Harumi Kobayashi, director of the International Association of Sumi in Japan. Stephen is the first Australian director of the International Chinese Calligraphic and Brush Painters Society (ICCPS) and now serves as the Australian advisor.

Stephen’s work has been exhibited in China, Japan, and Australia. In 2023, he was invited to the Nippon Suibokuga Art Association Exhibition in Okayama, Japan, and the Art Beyond Boundaries exhibition in Tokyo, where he received the International Honour Award for 2024.During my visit, Stephen gave me a brief lesson in sumi-e ink painting, highlighting the importance of brush strokes, posture, and mindfulness. His passion for the art form was clear, and it was a privilege to learn from such a distinguished artist.Stephen’s work is held in public and private collections, and he regularly teaches and exhibits. My visit to his studio was both educational and inspiring.
